# When a Boring Signup Screen Is the Right Tradeoff

**First 1000 field note · Updated September 19, 2026**
By Ali Abouelatta · Original issues: April 18, 2023; April 5 and August 2, 2024

Signup is a poor place to make users admire design. The job is to make the next step easy to understand and finish.

## What the design is doing

In “Use boring sign-up screens,” I framed the choice as functionality versus delight and discussed redesigns from Ring, AllTrails, Nextdoor, and Spotify. In my account, plain functional screens beat more entertaining treatments in the first three examples, and an illustration hurt the Spotify login and registration flow.

These are observations from my original research. They point to a mechanism, not a universal conversion law.

A signup screen sits between intent and value. The user clicked because they want an account, trial, saved item, or product access. Every extra element competes with that next action.

A background video or illustration can pull attention away from the form and call to action. Video, animation, and large illustration files also add weight to the path. A slower or larger download might make registration harder for people on slower connections; that is a hypothesis, not a measured result here.

## Boring does not mean empty

My related issue on signup benefits described three examples: Baremetrics used product benefits instead of user quotes; Hotels.com added a benefits callout before registration; and Zoom explained the benefits of a free basic account at the start of the flow.

That gives users a reason to complete the form rather than adding a decorative hero.

My registration-paywall issue makes a similar point from the other side. After reviewing more than 100 onboarding flows, I observed that registration paywalls often showed less context about subscription benefits than paywalls appearing later in the product, especially when an app had several tiers.

A screen can be visually quiet and still persuasive. A clear benefit, recognizable authentication option, short form, and honest next step can make signup feel intentional.

## When the tradeoff favors function

Choose the quieter version when:

- The user already has strong intent.
- The product has a short path to value.
- The flow has technical or geographic constraints.
- The action involves trust-sensitive account, payment, location, or personal-data decisions.

Put the value statement near the form, offer expected account options, make the primary button describe the next action, and keep the rest out of the way.

## When plain is not enough

A functional signup screen cannot explain a product the user does not understand. If intent is low, add the smallest amount of context needed to answer:

1. What do I get?
2. Why do I need an account?
3. What happens after I continue?

The Baremetrics, Hotels.com, and Zoom benefit callouts answer those questions before the form becomes a commitment.

An illustration can help when it explains the product, establishes trust, or shows the outcome. A video can help when motion is the product and the user needs to see it. Media earns its space only when it makes the next decision easier.

The mistake is using delight as a substitute for a clear promise. A beautiful signup screen can still leave the user asking what happens after the click.

## A small test plan

- Start with the plain functional version.
- Test one addition at a time: a benefit sentence, illustration, demonstration, testimonial, or authentication path.
- Keep the form and offer stable when the question is the extra element.
- Track registration completion and the next useful action.
- Do not turn four source-reported redesigns into a universal benchmark.

## The takeaway

Start boring when signup is a bridge to value. Add delight when it makes the value easier to understand.

Historical facts are attributed to these sources. An observed product change does not establish conversion lift.
