# Product Hunt Seeded Culture Before It Chased Scale

> The first community should be designed before it is opened.

**First 1000 field note · Updated September 20, 2026**
By Ali Abouelatta · Original case study: August 31, 2020

## Seed the room with the right people

Product Hunt began as a daily email and a Linkydink group for people Ryan Hoover already knew in the startup world, not as a public website. The first product was a small, curated room; the website came after the room had a reason to exist.

Hoover used his network to put a few dozen influential people on the first email list. It grew to **170 subscribers**, who replied that they enjoyed the daily digest. The goal was not to maximize registrations before understanding the culture. It was to make the feed interesting enough for early readers to return.

The first users acted like editors: they established what was posted, how people responded, and why newcomers should join.

## Build the smallest repeatable ritual

The first format was a daily collection of links sent by email. Linkydink let contributors share links and subscribers receive the digest. This tested whether a specific group would enjoy receiving the product every day and contribute enough to make the next edition worth opening.

The website came later. Ryan and his friend Nathan built it on an open-source Reddit/Hacker News-style framework in **eight days**. The interface supported behavior the email list had already made visible.

## Protect the first culture

After the website was ready, Ryan invited about **100 early supporters** to test the MVP and asked them not to share Product Hunt publicly. The controlled group established norms and exposed problems before public distribution.

After PandoDaily published the first story, early contributors shared it and Product Hunt reached **400 users**. A Fast Company story added another **400**. The team then grew from **800 to 2,000 users in 20 days** by identifying influential members, giving them contributor access, and sending manual referral emails.

The pattern was to seed culture, give people who understood it a way to invite others, and let distribution amplify a product that already worked at small scale.

## The founder decision

Before launching a community product, answer:

1. What is the daily or weekly ritual? Establish a repeatable reason to return before expanding the surface area.
2. Who should shape the norms? Hand-pick early contributors around the behavior you want repeated.
3. What must stay private while the culture forms? Use a controlled test to reveal bad defaults.
4. Which early users can invite the next cohort? Give distribution work to people who understand the product’s taste.

## The takeaway

Product Hunt recruited its first users into a ritual, then asked them to teach the next group how to participate.
