# A launch works better when scarcity and listening do different jobs

**First 1000 field note · Updated September 21, 2026**
**By Ali Abouelatta · Original issue by Ali Abouelatta: March 14, 2021**

A launch can create attention. Only a small cohort can tell you what deserves to survive it.

## The launch was concentrated

Our March 14, 2021 issue *Instagram in 1 minute* reports that Instagram grew from fewer than 12 users to 25,000 in 24 hours after a launch supported by Jack Dorsey and other design influencers, press coverage, and App Store visibility. This is the source’s historical account, not a guaranteed launch template.

The useful choice was concentration: a small group already had enough reach to make the launch visible in one moment. Give a launch a clear moment and a clear audience rather than scattering signups over time.

## The first product was discovered by asking

Before Instagram, the team had Burbn, a broader location product. The issue says the founders asked the remaining users why they still used it. Their answer pointed toward photo sharing rather than the full original product thesis.

Ask why the people who remain are still there, rather than only asking which features to add. Their answer can reveal what survived the noise. Remove the rest aggressively enough that the new promise is legible.

## The special detail came from a real objection

The source describes filters arriving after Kevin Systrom’s girlfriend said she would not post photos because they did not look as good as someone else’s. The filter answered a specific reason a real person would not share.

Our preferred sequence is to create a focused first moment, listen to people who actually try the product, and fix the objection that blocks the next action. Scarcity gets attention; listening earns the product.

## The launch checklist

1. What one moment or audience can make the first release legible?
2. Which small group gets access early enough to shape the product?
3. Why do the users who remain keep using the product?
4. What specific objection stops them from sharing or returning?
5. What will we remove so the new promise is easier to see?

## The takeaway

Use a launch to create a shared moment, then use the first users to discover the product you should keep. Attention and learning are separate jobs.
