# Default alive is a sales system before it is a finance metric

**First 1000 field note · Updated September 21, 2026**
**By Ali Abouelatta · Guest post by Ruchin Kulkarni in Ali Abouelatta’s issue: February 8, 2022**

Runway is a financial number. Default alive is an operating behavior.

## The list was the product

Our February 8, 2022 guest post by Ruchin Kulkarni describes how Retool built a target list of 10,000 companies, expanded it into roughly 40,000 individual contacts, and used founder-led outbound. The post reports an 8% response rate, early adopters, and a $1.5 million enterprise pilot. These are source-reported historical figures.

The operating pattern is straightforward: choose a narrow customer profile, build the list, contact the people who own the problem, and learn from every response. “Brute force” is a temporary system for converting uncertainty into conversations, not random activity.

## Show the product before the deck

Our issue describes Jeff Lawson’s reported Twilio demonstration, in which he built a working conference call live for developers. A live demo, small installation, customer-workflow teardown, or working sample can let buyers experience the product before they understand the whole category or company. Early sales often consist of several smaller changes in buyer belief.

## Give the effort a boundary

The issue includes historical examples from Atlassian’s low-budget conference tactic, Tinder’s campus parties, ClickUp’s content cadence, Algolia’s time-zone adaptation, and Stripe’s founder-led installations. These examples show that early distribution is often designed around where a specific buyer already gathers. They are not instructions to copy beer stunts, fake identities, or misleading tactics.

Bound the work with a number of accounts, a number of demos, a fixed learning question, and a decision date. Otherwise manual activity can become permanent founder exhaustion and a substitute for a business model.

## The default-alive operating review

Ask:

1. Which exact customer profile are we pursuing this week?
2. What list, room, workflow, or community already contains those people?
3. What proof can we put in front of them before the pitch?
4. What response or revenue event counts as learning?
5. When does this manual motion earn automation, hiring, or a stop?

## The takeaway

Default alive is not optimism about the runway. It is a bounded operating system that turns founder effort into customer proof before the cash runs out.
