# Creator products need content liquidity before they need creator scale

**First 1000 field note · Updated September 21, 2026**
**By Ali Abouelatta · Original issue by Ali Abouelatta: July 18, 2021**

A creator marketplace does not start with creators. It starts with enough good things to watch.

## Lower the cost of making the first thing

Our July 18, 2021 TikTok issue describes Musical.ly’s pivot from a difficult educational-video product to a simple music-video creation tool. The team retained mobile editing infrastructure while removing the work of planning and producing a three-to-five-minute lesson.

Content liquidity means users can make something with material already inside the product: music, templates, effects, prompts, edits, and an audience. The first contribution should feel like a small action, not a new profession.

## Give ordinary users a reason to try

The issue says Musical.ly created a “dream” for regular users: someone ordinary might become visible on the new platform. It describes an intentionally uneven early distribution model in which a small number of users received disproportionate attention while the network formed.

The reusable question is why a non-expert should make the first contribution. A creator tool with no chance of being seen feels like work; a tool that promises fame without making creation easy feels like a lottery.

## Create with the first cohort

The historical case describes direct feedback, a “my ideas” button, user conversations, shared mockups, and early app-store positioning around Instagram and Messenger searches. Those tactics belong to that historical case; platform and search-store rules change.

Keep the feedback loop inside the product. Ask what early users love and hate before asking for a feature list. Show the next workflow before engineering it. Watch what the first cohort makes, then remove the steps that prevent a second contribution.

## The creator-liquidity checklist

1. Can a new user make something useful with material already inside the product?
2. How long does the first contribution take from blank screen to shareable output?
3. What makes an ordinary user believe they can be seen or helped?
4. Where can we observe and respond to early creator behavior?
5. What will make the second contribution easier than the first?

## The takeaway

Creator supply is a product problem before it is a recruiting problem. Make the first contribution easy, visible, and worth repeating.
