# Build the smallest useful product before the product is ready

**First 1000 field note · Updated September 21, 2026**
**By Ali Abouelatta · Original issue by Ali Abouelatta: September 28, 2020**

You do not always need to ship the core product to give someone a useful first experience.

## The hard product was not ready

Our September 28, 2020 Journify issue describes a slow-to-build audio-journaling product. Before the full product was ready, founder Lamia put a useful **Burn Out Test** on the website. The source reports that it helped collect **5,000 email subscribers**.

The lesson is not simply to make a quiz. Find the smallest useful answer adjacent to the problem we eventually want to own. The test gave people a reason to interact with Journify before downloading, signing up, and building an audio habit.

## The acquisition product must teach you something

A free tool can become a vanity project. The Burn Out Test connected to Journify’s promise of helping people understand and work on their wellbeing. It also helped the team learn which language resonated and which questions people cared about.

Define the learning job first. Decide whether the acquisition product should identify the audience, capture a meaningful signal, create a repeatable content angle, or show that the problem is worth returning to. Traffic alone cannot answer those questions.

## Content is a system, not a post

The source says Lamia hired **14 content-marketing interns** from more than **400 applications** before launch and distributed research-backed content across Spotify, YouTube, Elpha, Girlboss, Product Hunt, Reddit, Pinterest, and other communities. These are historical details, not a recommendation to hire 14 interns on day one.

Make one useful asset feed several places while keeping the voice human. Start with one repeatable question, one format, and one channel where the audience already asks it. Expand only when the loop produces signal.

## The acquisition-product test

1. What small useful answer can we give before the core product is ready?
2. Does that answer sit next to the real problem or merely collect traffic?
3. What user signal will change our product or audience decision?
4. Which one channel can distribute the first version honestly?
5. What will make someone return after the first useful interaction?

## The takeaway

An acquisition product earns its place when it gives the user a real answer and gives the founder a real signal before the core product is finished.
