Our Stripe field note describes an early-customer motion built around trust, proximity, and manual onboarding. Stripe began with a YC network: Ross Boucher of 280 North was the first customer, followed by roughly 20 other YC companies. Patrick and John installed the product directly on customers’ laptops. During beta, Stripe charged 5% plus $0.50, compared with competitors near 2.9%–3.2% plus $0.30; the premium was interpreted as attracting customers who valued easier integration. A Hacker News request was estimated to produce 300–550 waitlist signups, explicitly an unscientific estimate and not a verified active or paying-customer count. Later channels included developer events, Capture the Flag competitions, meetups, Stack Overflow ads, and unsolicited reviews.
