We examine how Snapchat, originally launched as Picaboo, found its early audience after reaching only 127 users by the end of summer 2011. A cousin’s demonstration to classmates preceded growth to 30,000 users by early 2012 and a refocus on Generation Z teens. The early product opened directly to the camera, used disappearing photos and read receipts, and supported person-to-person or group messaging. Historical figures in our January 2021 case include 30% group Snaps, 80% sent during the school day, growth attributed to word of mouth at 68%, invites at 19%, press at 9%, one million users by October 2012, and more than 231 photos processed per second. We recommend finding the social setting where behavior repeats, identifying the product detail that prompts a response, measuring early channels separately, and being willing to change the target audience.
